May 29 2011

Yesterday was another perfect example of work getting the way of my life, so today I was playing catch-up.

It started badly, with a no-show of Great White Egret at Castle Island. I’m not saying they weren’t there; I didn’t see them!

Cresswell next, and Northumberland’s newest breeding species. The picture and the recording are from a week ago.

From here it was up to Druridge, where the wind was really howling and cold. I put on another two layers, it was that cold!

Today there were three Spoonbill’s on show, and as per usual, they were asleep! After a while, one of them broke the Spoonbill rule, and started feeding.

While here, chatting with Andy, I used one of the gadgets to dial up the Interweb thingy and discovered that the Terek Sandpiper was still at Hauxley, so that was where I went next.

The bird was initially in the same small bay where I saw my first Terek Sandpiper way back in 1986. That was before the webernet thing and pagers and mobile phones and birdlines. I heard about that one from the local TV news bulletin. Them were the days!!

Never close, at best these are just record shots

And that was it, because as I left, the wind had reverted back to hurricane strength, so I went home.
